Improving the Biocompatibility of Calcium Silicate-Based Biomaterials

Somayeh Ghaffari, Amirkabir University of Technology PhD student and manager of the project "Biocompatibility and the Ability to Create Osteogenic Differentiation of Mesenchymal Stem Cells in the Portland Cement/Calcium Phosphate System" said: "Considering that bone graft is the second major tissue graft in the world, improvement and development of artificial bone replacements are in high demand. One of the serious barriers to the utilization of Portland cement-based biomaterials or calcium silicate in bone repair and engineering applications is the alkalinization of the wet environment around the cement due to the dissolution of calcium hydroxide, which challenges the biocompatibility of the cement. This research offers a new, simplified and effective method to reduce alkaline pH, which hence improves the biocompatibility of calcium silicate cements.”
This project advisor was Dr. Mehran Solati-Hashjin, an Amirkabir University of Technology professor and was done in collaboration with the Cellular & Molecular Research Center of Babol University of Medical Sciences.
Moreover, the findings have been published in the International Stem Cell & Regenerative Medicine Congress as well as the Journal of Biomedical Materials.
