AUT researchers, using a new biomechanical method, managed to determine the risk and probability of removing bone tumor pre-operative fractures to reduce complications of post-operative fractures in patients with tumors.
Azadeh Quchani, AUT Ph.D graduate and executor of the project "providing a biomechanical criterion to reconstruct the cavities left after giant cell tumor evacuation: finite element analysis and experimental tests" said: the aim of this project was to provide a quantitative and biomechanical criterion to determine patients with high risk and probability of pre-operative fracture and to use preventive measures and appropriate method of reconstruction of the cavity left from tumor evacuation during operation. These measures can prevent post-operation fractures and need for reoperation to fix and treat the fracture.
This project has been executed in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, AUT (biomechanics specialization) and Mohammad Hossein Ebrahimzadeh (faculty member of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences) was the advisor of the project.
Some of the results of this research has been published in the prestigious journal of Scientific Reports, a Nature Publication. Furthermore, an article extracted from this project, was placed in the short list of top papers in the International Society of Biomechanics Conference (ISB/ASB) held in 2019 and was nominated for the David Winter Young Investigator Award by the International Society of Biomechanics.
